Doug Lexa

Von Artists co-owner in Tokyo’s, Doug Lexa’s music industry career background brief:

Starting in his early years, over four decades ago, Lexa came up through the A&M Records rankings and subsequently went onto success with some prominent labels.

Co-founder of Rykodisc, which later became known for landmark catalog involving working one-on-one with artists such as:

* Frank Zappa,

* David Bowie,

* Elvis Costello,

* Yoko Ono,

* Nick Drake,

* Nine Inch Nails,

* And Jimi Hendrix (working directly with his father on releases).

One important strategic innovation of Lexa's was the early recognition that “digital rights” could be separately licensed from analog rights, a concept that later became the industry standard practice it is today.

Lexa’s former role inside Rykodisc

* A Manufacturing and international-business strategist,

* Technology and sourcing specialist,

* And liaison to Japanese production and supply chains.

Rykodisc grew from a startup launched into one of the most respected independent labels of the CD era.

* Expanded into distribution and publishing,

* Acquired other labels,

* Became a powerhouse in catalog exploitation,

* And was eventually sold.

Key milestones:

Today the Rykodisc catalog is effectively folded into Warner’s broader catalog operations and distribution structure. Lexa’s exit was well before the eventual two sales of the catalog.

Why Lexa is historically important:

Lexa is significantly more of a transitional-era architect than a public figure.

He belongs to the generation of music-business operators who:

1. Recognized CDs would replace vinyl far faster than the majors expected,

2. Understood international manufacturing logistics,

3. Saw catalog reissues as premium products rather than leftovers,

4. And helped create the business logic that later evolved into today’s catalog-driven streaming economy.

Other ventures include:

Heads Up International & Oxymoron P&D, Inc., Seattle, WA  1990 – 1998
Co-Founder, VP International Sales, VP Production - Formed Oxymoron P&D with Frank Klammer, Precision Sound Marketing, Inc., which spawned Heads Up International, ultimately taken over by Dave Love, sold to Telarc then Concord Jazz.

Doug Lexa’s Role in Founding Heads Up International in Seattle

Heads Up International was founded in 1990 by Dave Love, a Cleveland, Ohio–based jazz producer and former musical director for Donald Byrd. Love’s inspiration came from a jazz group he formed at North Texas State University. After recording an album with soprano saxophonist Dave Liebman, Love sought a label to release it. While trying to sell it, he took a job as National Director of Sales & Marketing for Oxymoron P&D, a record distributor. There, executives convinced him to start his own label using Oxymoron’s distribution network.

Using Oxymoron for distribution, Love launched Heads Up International in Seattle, Washington in 1990, with the label’s first release being The Energy of the Chance by Dave Liebman. Lexa’s involvement came through his work with Rykodisc, which he co‑founded in 1984. Rykodisc specialized in CD manufacturing and distribution, and Lexa used his international business and manufacturing expertise to help secure production and distribution deals

Leadership & Industry Weight:

 Von Artists is co-operated with Doug Lexa, a major industry veteran, with a Tokyo division, adding international infrastructure and experience that isn’t obvious at first glance but matters a lot behind the scenes. Former president Monte Von Struck also instrumental in company development with over 40 years of experience.

 That combination - editorial/media reach + international industry ops - is fairly uncommon among indie-leaning artist service companies. Provides comprehensive distribution for digital and physical formats (CDs/DVDs), including "Manufacture On Demand" (MOD) services for physical products.

Artist Development & Marketing: Offering personalized coaching, industry networking, and tailored marketing/promotion strategies, including social media management and influencer collaborations. Here to assist and mentor those already doing the work behind the music.

Focus on Full-Release Artistry: The company, particularly in its leadership's philosophy, emphasizes the "whole experience" of a music release, pushing back against the trend of shrinking cover art and advocating for a focus on the full album experience.

Distribution Criteria - What we do vs. others + what we accept and strive for with clients

 The full scope of the catalog is best seen directly on their website, where releases are fully browsable and clickable through retailer/store icons (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.). It’s not just a sampling—it’s a large, active catalog.

 The roster reflects real variety

 Independent artists

 Partner labels such as Mindsnap Music, etc.

 Legacy and historically significant artists, notably Roni Lee (writer for The Runaways, Venus & The Razorblades, and others), whose inclusion signals credibility beyond the typical indie-services model.

 This positions Von Artists less as a “boutique distributor” and more as a hybrid artist/label services dual-nation hub with a long tail catalog.

Superior Tech Support/Customer Service (always open communication line) commonly unfound with DIY Distributors.

AI Music and Data Training Protected - This is our "Opt-Out" policy with The Orchard/Sony. Further protection is always recommended, but Sony takes this very seriously and have the best industry protection available for blocking AI. This means you do not have to check a box at sign up, consenting to AI music and data training and more.

All one time only service fee package tiers for marketing are budget based, discussed in the onboarding process for fitting after EPK submissions to email and response from the team. No repeat or annual fees, but expedited fees are detailed in the contract. We have a minimum three-year commitment and optional title basis agreements (also budget based). Reach out to our email address or phone, DM our social media. We work steadily and do not solicit artists + lead time is everything.

Big picture

What this really indicates is that Von Artists isn’t just “helping artists upload music.” It’s built by people who:

 Understand press cycles

 Have longstanding industry relationships

 Work with both emerging artists and legacy acts

 Operate across multiple markets, including Japan

Distributor's Comparison Table: DIY vs. Major Independent

How Von Artists Is Different

Von Artists Ltd. is not a self-service distributor; it operates as a selective label services and distribution partner built for artists and labels already functioning at a professional level.

1. Partner-level distribution, not aggregation

 Von Artists is a direct partner of The Orchard / Sony (digital) and Alliance Entertainment (physical).

 This means releases are handled through major-label infrastructure, not pooled uploads alongside hundreds of thousands of unrelated tracks.

 Physical product is treated as part of a coordinated release strategy, not an afterthought.

Contrast:

DIY platforms are open-access aggregators - anyone can upload, and all releases are treated largely the same.

2. Selective roster, not mass onboarding

 Von Artists curates its roster, working primarily with:

 Touring bands

 Active labels

 Artists with ongoing marketing and promotional efforts

 They are not built for hobby releases or “upload-and-forget” projects.

Contrast:

Most (DIY) distributors scale by volume. Von Artists (DFY) scales by artist and label activity.

3. Revenue-sharing model tied to marketing performance

 Artists and labels benefit from favorable revenue splits, provided they:

 Consistently market and promote

 Maintain engagement and performance thresholds

 This creates a shared incentive model where growth benefits both sides.

Contrast:

Flat-fee or fixed-percentage (DIY) distributors get paid whether the artist works the release or not.

4. Built-in press, editorial, and media reach

 Co-founder and President Larry Toering brings decades of experience as:

 A syndicated music critic across 25+ publications

 An author/contributor of 40+ music review books

 Publisher of The Blog of Eternal Metal

 This gives Von Artists a press-aware, media-first mindset uncommon among distributors.

Contrast:

Most offer optional marketing tools; Von Artists is structurally embedded in the media ecosystem.

5. International and touring-focused infrastructure

 Von Artists routinely works with artists and labels touring internationally, including:

 The UK

 Multiple European markets

 With Doug Lexa’s Tokyo division and international experience, the company is designed to support releases beyond a domestic footprint.

Contrast:

Most aggregators are globally available, but not internationally operational.

6. Hybrid catalog: emerging, established, and legacy

 The catalog spans:

 Independent artists

 Partner labels (e.g., Mindsnap Music)

 Legacy artists such as Roni Lee (The Runaways)

 This signals long-term catalog stewardship rather than disposable single releases.

Contrast:

Upload-driven platforms are optimized for velocity, not legacy management.

Von Artists Ltd., is a selective label services and distribution partner operating on major-label infrastructure, designed for touring artists and active labels who treat releases as long-term assets—not disposable uploads.

Who Von Artists is for (and who it isn’t)

Best fit  Touring artists and bands Independent labels with release plans  Artists committed to marketing, promotion, and growth Projects with physical + digital strategy.

Not a fit  One-off or hobby releases  Artists looking for instant, hands-off uploads  Projects without ongoing promotion. Without the above efforts, titles tend to sit and defeat the purpose of growth and yield less royalties along the speed of no movement. This doesn't meet or exceed either party's goals, it's not part of the agreement.

In summary, Von Artists Ltd. currently positions itself as an independent, artist-friendly alternative to major labels, balancing modern, tech-forward distribution with the protection of human artistry. An artists and labels services company with old world physical product experience and independent record store and big box online retailer connections across America, Europe, Japan and SE Asia.

As of early 2026.

Here is what Von Artists Ltd. is doing: Anti-AI Data Protection: The company has taken a firm stance against AI training on their content. They are leveraging their partnership with Sony Music/The Orchard to ensure artist catalogs are protected and not used for unauthorized training.
